LineMap
LineMap is the Linework map: it shows the posts and videos people shared in a place, and the bars, restaurants, shops and other places tagged in posts. Use it to discover what is happening around you, or anywhere you are going.
What LineMap is for#
What people share nearby
Photos and videos posted with a location, so you can see a neighbourhood, an event or a city through the eyes of the community.
Places with posts
Round pins for the places tagged in posts, with their category and how many posts there are. Tap one to see its page and get directions.
Never live positions
LineMap shows only what people chose to add to a post. It never shows where anyone is right now.
LineMap is free and is available in the app and on web.linework.app. It replaces the old Spiral map, with places added. Available from the latest version of the app: if you still see the old map, update the app.
How to open it#
| From | How | Where the map opens |
|---|---|---|
| Trends | In Spiral tap Trends, then the LineMap card ("Posts, videos and places near you"). | Near you, if you allow location; otherwise search a place. |
| A post | Tap the location shown on a post. | Centred on that post's location. |
| A place page | Open a place (tap 📍 the place's name on a post), then tap View on LineMap. | Centred on that place. |
| LineAI | Ask the assistant to open the map. | Near you. |
| Web app | On web.linework.app click LineMap in the menu (page /map). | Near you if the browser shares your location; otherwise search a place. |
Use the map#
- Move and zoom the map with your fingers (or the mouse on the web). Posts and places reload by themselves for the area you are looking at.
- Choose a filter at the top: All (posts and places), Posts or Places. The counter tells you how many there are in the area, for example "12 posts · last 30 days".
- Posts: tap a photo on the map to highlight it in the row of cards at the bottom; tap the card to open the post. You can also swipe through the cards.
- Places: tap a round pin to open its preview (see below).
Tip: if the map is empty, zoom out or move it: only posts where the author added a location and places with at least one post you can see appear on it.
Search a place#
- Tap the title at the top or the magnifying glass (on the web, the search box above the map).
- Type the name of a place, a city or an address in Search a place.
- Tap a result: the map moves there and shows its posts and places.
Search works anywhere in the world and doesn't need your location. Places come from OpenStreetMap. If you search a lot in a short time, the app asks you to wait a moment and try again.
Near me and the location permission#
- Tap Near me to centre the map on where you are. Your position appears as a red dot.
- The app asks for location only when it needs it: when you tap Near me, or when the map has no other point to start from (for example from Trends). It asks only while you use the app.
- If you say no, LineMap still works: search a place or open it from a post. To change your mind, allow location for Linework in your phone's Settings.
- The red dot stays on your phone: your position is not sent to anyone and is not shown to other people.
Place preview: Open and Directions#
Tapping a place shows a preview with its name, category, address, how many posts there are and a picture from the latest one.
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Open (on the web Open place) | Opens the place page: map, address and all the posts tagged there that you can see, newest first. |
| Directions | Opens the route in Apple Maps or Google Maps (on the web, in a new tab). |
What appears on the map#
| On the map | When |
|---|---|
| Posts and videos | Only if the author added a location to the post, rounded to about 1 km. In the app, posts from the last 30 days. |
| Places | Only places tagged in at least one post you are allowed to see. A place with no visible posts doesn't appear. |
| Who can see a post on the map | The same people who can see it in the feed: public posts for everyone (from private accounts only for their followers), Friends posts for the author's followers, your own posts for you. Posts by people you blocked, or who blocked you, never appear. |
Privacy#
- LineMap never shows where people are right now. It only shows the location or the place someone chose to add to a post.
- When you add a place to a post, only the place you choose is saved (its public address), never your phone's exact position. See Places and stores in posts.
- Stories and live streams don't put you on the map.
- Live location in chat is something else: it is shared only with the people in that chat, for a time you choose, and never appears on LineMap.
- To take a post off the map, remove its location or place with ⋯ → Edit post, or delete the post.
Good to know#
- Why don't I see my post on the map? Check that you added a location or a place, and that the post isn't too old (in the app the map shows the last 30 days).
- Can someone follow me on LineMap? No. The map shows only posts and places, never live positions. To let a friend follow you on the way, use live location in a chat, which stops by itself.
- Does it cost anything? No, LineMap is free.
